Lauren Huret’s Prophecies of the Noosphere is inspired by the 1989 invention of the World Wide Web by scientist Tim Berners-Lee at CERN in Geneva. This historic event laid the foundation for the Internet as we know it today. The artist has sought to recreate a fantasy Tim Berners-Lee’s office. She has come up with a still image on which she projects a transparent animation of the Big Bang, which caused the formation of the cosmos. This parallelisation invites us to think of the creation of the Internet as that of a new, ever-expanding universe. The purpose of the artist is both to highlight a remarkable event for humankind, which took place in Geneva, and to recall the importance of this technology in our lives. This work is of direct relevance for passers-by, who access the Internet via their mobile phones, and station users, many of whom are on their way to work, where they will use a computer connected to the Net.
